Robert Owen was in Lee Co. in 1810 and had left Scott Co. by 1840. While these dates are consistent with Eli’s birth and move to Kentucky, the ages of Robert’s young children, according to the census, are all older than Eli would have been. This plus the identification of Eli as a son of Elisha by Elisha’s great grandson tends to eliminate Robert as a candidate for being Eli’s father.

Several sources agree on Elisha’s descent from Laurence, but reason questions whether as father or grandfather because of his age. In 1800 soon after the birth of Elisha and Levi the census reports 2 males under 5 years in Laurence’s household. We will assume they were sons.

Notes of Samuel Monroe Owens - great grandson of Elisha Owens, “First four sons of Elisha and Delilah (Ray) Owens: John, b. Jan 24, 1825, d. Nov 4, 1894, m. Mary D. Buster (This is the son in my tree.); Eli; Samuel, Washington. I hope this helps you.”

This is in conflict with Malinda’s application for a Virginia Confederate widow’s pension , April 6, 1916. She claimed that William and she were married, June 1852, but they appear in the 1850 census as married. In the pension application, Malinda claimed to be 92 years, thereby born 1824-5 in Botetourt Co., VA, the 1850 census says 1827 and 1880 census says 1825. William died, August 22, 1914, in Clinchport, Scott Co., VA of Bright’s Disease. William served in the Confed. Army Cav. Volunteers. At this time Malinda was living with L. C. & B. L. Owens in Clinchport. L. C. Owens was probably Levi Calvin.
